Imaging & Radiology
What’s a Radiologist or Interventional Radiologist?
An Interventional radiologist is a radiologist with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions using minimally-invasive image-guided procedures.
Types of Medical Imaging
Imaging tests can help your doctor detect or diagnose a health condition. Sometimes, treatments can even be done by interventional radiologists during imaging test.
Depending on your needs, your doctor may recommend:
- Bone density scan – Measures your bone strength
- Computed tomography (CT) – Creates detailed pictures of the inside of the body using X-rays
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – Uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to create high-resolution images of the inside of the body
- Mammogram – Takes pictures of breast tissue using X-rays
- PET/SPECT and nuclear medicine – Lets your doctor examine how different parts of your body are working
- Ultrasound imaging – Uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body
- X-ray and fluoroscopy – Makes black-and-white pictures of the inside of the body with electromagnetic waves
Radiation Exposure During Imaging
The amount of radiation used during medical imaging is very low and it rarely causes side effects. And, if you need a test that uses radiation, you’ll receive the lowest effective dose.
The benefits of diagnosis and treatment with medical imaging are much greater than the risks. However, before any imaging test, tell your doctor if you are or may be pregnant. During pregnancy, it’s better to use medical imaging equipment that doesn’t use radiation.
